Ocean colors and tropical plants complement a beach-themed bedroom.
A beach-themed bedroom creates your very own get away using the colors and textures of a tropical island or your favorite coastline. Textiles and accessories provide a cohesive beach effect without the need to paint the room. Depending on your desired effect, your design details may evoke a serene beach retreat, the mystery and romance of a subtropical hideaway out of the movie "Casablanca," or a cozy cottage on the shore. The use of color and texture brings the theme to life, giving your bedroom an economical update without drop cloths or replacing furniture.
Instructions
1. Decorate your bed in sheets, pillowcases and a bedspread or comforter cover to go with the beach theme. For example, use tan, sky blue, deep blue, sea-green or pale teal sheets and a matching or color coordinated spread. Add a sand-colored bed skirt to complete the beach effect.
2. Add sand-colored throw rugs on each side of the bed. Choose off-white, warm beige or gold. The rugs frame the bed and add to your new color scheme even if the existing carpet or floor doesn't go with the beach theme.
3. Hang soft, pale curtains or drapes, such as muslin, gauze or sheers in white, cream, pale gold, sky blue or light teal. For winter or a dark beach color scheme, use dark gold, deep blue or a deep sea-green in a heavy fabric such as velvet or canvas.
4. Center potted plants in decorative pots in beach colors, such as sand, blue or green. Display the plants near windows or on each side of a French door if the bedroom has a glass door. This provides the plants with light and adds the effect of sunlight on the plants to the beach ambiance.
5. Display driftwood in the pots of the potted plants, such as around the trunks of palms. Angle driftwood around the base of each pot, as though it,s been washed up there, if desired.
6. Center a fountain on a shelf or dresser near the bed. A fountain brings trickling water into your bedroom, standing for a creek running to the ocean. Add seashells or beach glass to the fountain to go with the
7. Arrange seashells in decorative bowls and place them on shelves and the dresser. Display a row of seashells in front of a dresser mirror or along a windowsill.
8. Hang fishing nets from the curtain rods or tops of blinds for a three-dimensional beach-theme window treatment, if desired. Use an S-hook on each end of the curtain rod or the top of the blinds to hold the net. Double each fish net and drape the net so it falls at an angle across the window, or gather each end of the net in the S-hooks and leave the middle hanging down in a smile-shape like a swag. Put one to three glass floats in each fish net.
9. Center a large seascape photo or poster on the largest expanse of wall that you can see from the bed. Hang the art so the center of it is at your eye-level when you stand in front of it.
