Dining room
Dining chair cushions never seem to last as long as your table does, not with all of the food spills and hindquarters gracing them over the years. But there's no need to replace your chairs when you can cover your own cushions.
Instructions
1. Remove the cushion and board from your dining room chair by unscrewing it from the underside of the chair.
2. Measure the size of the dining chair cushion. Include the board, or the sturdy portion of your dining chair, when measuring.
3. Cut enough fabric and batting to extend 2 inches beyond the cushion on all sides. For example, if your cushion is 16 inches by 18 inches, your fabric and batting pieces should be 20 inches (16 + 2 + 2) by 22 inches (18 + 2 + 2). Cut a piece of felt that is 1 inch smaller (total) than the size of the cushion (using the above example, the felt would be 15 by 17 inches).
4. Place your items face down, one on top of the other in this order: fabric, batting, cushion and board.
5. Center the cushion in the middle of the fabric and batting, and then slide the board to the center of the cushion. Adjust the fabric so it sits evenly across the cushion.
6. Pull the fabric and batting lightly over the cushion to the underside. Staple once through the fabric into the board, centered between the two side corners. Position the staple 1/2 inch from the outer edge of the fabric.
7. Go to the top side of the chair and pull the fabric and batting taut. Staple once in the middle of the two corners, 1/2 inch from the outer edge of the fabric.
8. Turn the chair over and pull one left edge of the fabric and batting until it is tight and even across the chair. Keep the tension on the fabric and turn it over.
9. Staple the center of the backside, 1/2 inch from the fabric edge, and repeat Steps 8 and 9 for the left edge.
10. Pull out any wrinkles in the fabric at the front of the cushion, but do not pull tight enough to compress the cushion. Add staples on the side closest to you, from the middle staple to each of the corners, stopping 1 1/2 inches away from each corner.
11. Repeat this on the back of the cushion, then the sides. Pull the fabric taut to remove wrinkles as you staple.
12. Round out the corners of the chair last by making small pleats in both the fabric and batting. Use both hands to pleat the fabric into the corners evenly, working first from the side and top left corner. Repeat on the other corners, securing all pleats with staples.
13. Place the felt over the fabric on the underside of the cushion, centering it. Staple the perimeter every 1/2 inch to secure the felt.
