Painting A Dining Room Table Shabby Chic

The shabby chic style is ideal for a dining room table.

When shabby chic is your goal, keep attractive comfort in mind. Combinations of color and texture, mixing and matching in whimsical fashion, are the tenets of the shabby chic style. When you wish to incorporate this style in your home's interior decor, one of the first places to start is the dining room. Painting a dining room table shabby chic can be an enjoyable project, letting yourself relax and create an innovative furniture piece.

Instructions

1. Fill the bucket with warm water and add a squirt of dishwashing soap to the water. Swirl the water gently to make bubbles. Saturate the sponge and use it to wash the table thoroughly. Rinse away the soap with plain water and dry the table with the towel.

2. Sand the table carefully with the 220-grit sandpaper to make its surfaces rough. Wipe away excess sawdust with the tack cloth.

3. Cover the floor beneath the table with the drop cloth to catch paint drips and spills.

4. Dip the 2-inch paintbrush into the latex primer and apply primer evenly to every surface of the table. Coat it completely. Let the primer layer dry before you proceed with the painting project.

5. Apply the dark base color of the acrylic paint over the table surface in a thin layer. Move the brush strokes with the grain of the table and cover the wood completely. Allow the paint to dry for the time recommended on the paint label.

6. Apply the cream-colored topcoat of acrylic paint over the base coat of paint. Make the paint cover the table surfaces evenly, removing any excess paint with the paintbrush when necessary.

7. Drag a dry 3-inch paintbrush across the table at random locations to remove some of the topcoat of paint before it dries, making the dark base color visible underneath. Work to create a random and distressed appearance with the bristles of the paintbrush, allowing some of the darker base color to show on the table surfaces. Allow the paint to dry completely after you finish.

8. Sand some of the corners and edges of the table with the 440-grit sandpaper after the topcoat dries. Sand very lightly, though, so you do not remove the base color of paint. Sanding should only remove the topcoat so the base coat peeks through in random spots.

9. Dip the 1/4-inch flat brush into an accent color of paint and apply outlines on the table legs. Use different colors to paint around the legs in bands, making the bands varying widths with varying spaces between the widths. The more random and colorful, the more shabby chic the table will look.

10. Allow the paint to dry completely before you use the table.
