Paint A Relaxing Master Bedroom

Choosing the right paint color creates a relaxing atmosphere in a bedroom.

A master bedroom should serve as a peaceful oasis away from your troubles -- a place where you can go at the end of the day and relax. Paint colors play an important role in the relaxation process, and several colors can promote feelings of calmness. Calming colors are generally light and airy, not bold or bright.

Instructions

1. Choose a relaxing color palette. First, decide which color group appeals to you the most -- cool tones or warm tones. You can also use your personal preferences for your color choices. For example, if you are a romantic person, choosing a light pink color would be very appropriate. If you have a love of the outdoors, choosing a light green or blue to evoke the feeling of being outside would be ideal. Relaxing colors include light blue, light green, ivory, light yellow, light pink or light purple. The idea is that the color should not be bright or bold. Red, oranges and vibrant colors don't work.

2. Select the right type of paint. A high gloss paint is dramatic and not suitable for this purpose. Use a matte or a satin finish for your paint. Paint texture is a personal preference, but typically, smooth is the best texture for a relaxing feel.

3. Test out several different paint colors. Home improvement and hardware stores offer paint swatches and as well as paint samples. Get several colors that appeal to you and apply these colors to your wall. You can tape up swatches or apply small amounts of your sample colors to the walls. Wait several days, viewing the colors in all types of light before you find the one that is your favorite.

4. Decide if you will paint the trim in your bedroom. If you personally like the look of your existing trim in the bedroom, you will not need to change it. However, painting the trim will give the room an entirely new look. For example, a soft sage green, coupled with ivory painted trim provides a calming feel to an entire room. White trim coordinates fwith relaxing colors in the cool-tone group of colors.

5. Prepare the room for painting. Remove all furniture from the room and lay down drop cloths to protect your flooring. Tape off the ceiling edges, baseboards, outlet boxes and window frames with painter's tape. Use a fine grade sandpaper to smooth away any rough spots on the walls so that your paint will adhere properly.

6. Apply a primer to the walls first. Unless the beginning color is white, you will need to use a primer on the walls. This will help you get a true representation of the color and will prevent any bleed-through when you paint. Always sand before applying a paint coat.

7. Paint the walls. Use a paint roller for the majority of the room, and brushes to cut in around the edges. Apply one coat and give it at least six to eight hours to dry. Use bright shop lights to illuminate the room after the first coat. This will help you determine if there are any spots that need more coverage. If necessary, apply a second coat of paint.

8. Add peaceful and calming accessories that coordinate with your choice of paint color. This will help finish off the room and bring your whole design together. Hang relaxing art prints that coordinate with your wall color. Romantic and breezy draperies can also add a nice finishing touch.

9. Add soft lighting to the room. To further enhance the relaxing feel of the room, add in soft lighting options. Replace existing lamp shades with shades that soften the light or buy new lamps. Choosing soft-light light bulbs in lower wattages will also help soften the light in the room.
