Fix A Noisy Bathroom Fan

Fix a Noisy Bathroom Fan

Bathroom fans are very important to the health of a home. They help to quickly remove excess moisture caused by toilets, showers and sinks. This moisture can encourage the growth of mold, which is harmful to people's health. Over time the bathroom fan can become noisy. Dirty fan blades, bad motor bearings, loose screws, and lack of lubrication are the most common causes of this problem. Sometimes a little maintenance can save you money and eliminate a noise problem at the same time.

Instructions

1. Shut off power to the fan at the main power panel.

2. Remove the cover to the fan by using a screwdriver to push in the tabs located along each side of the fan. Some fans use screws to hold the cover on. If this is the case, remove those screws to expose the fan.

3. Clean the fan blades using a warn damp rag. Check all of the fan mounting screws to verify whether or not they are tight. If they are not tight, tighten them.

4. Lubricate the motor shaft using WD40 or 3-in-1 oil. Use only one to three drops. Also check the shaft for excessive movement by trying to shack the shaft. Excessive movement means the motor bearings are bad, and the motor will have to be replaced.

5. Reattach the fan cover, turn the power back on, and test the fan. If the fan is still noisy, the entire unit should be replaced.
