Make Cushioned Slipcovers For Dining Chairs

Slip-covering dining room chairs is probably the most popular of all slipcover projects. You can change the entire look of your chairs simply by refinishing or painting the wood and changing the fabric of the seats. Most wood frame dining room chairs have upholstered seats that are attached to the chair with screws. Slip-covering each chair will take literally minutes to complete.

Instructions

1. Choose fabric for your chairs based on style and durability. You want your chairs to match your decor; however, since the chairs will be used around food, it's always a good idea to use a fabric that is durable and easy to clean. A microfiber fabric works wonderfully for both purposes. It comes in many colors and can easily be spot cleaned if food happens to fall on the seat.

2. Turn the chairs upside down and removing the screws from beneath with a screwdriver. Remember to keep the screws in a safe place so you can reattach the seats when you're finished covering them. After you have removed the seats, remove the existing fabric from each one. Before tossing out the old fabric, use it as a pattern to cut out your new fabric. This will ensure a perfect fit for each chair.

3. Use the existing foam if your seats are already cushioned. Or, if you prefer, you can replace it with new foam. You can save money by either using the existing foam, wrapping it in batting, or both. Batting is great for plumping up old foam or making it a little more firm. Take the batting and wrap it around both the back of the chair and the seat of the chair, and use your staple gun to secure it in place.

4. Place the seat upside down onto the fabric, placing it in the center. Pull the fabric up on each side of the seat, using the staple gun to staple the middle of each side of the seat. Pull the fabric up at each corner and attach it with another staple. Finish by placing stapes all along each side of the chair bottom while pulling the fabric taut. The staples should be no more than 11/2 inches to 2 inches apart to ensure a tight fit.

5. Replace the seats onto the wood frame with the screws.
