Match Window Treatments For An L Shaped Living Room & Dining Room

Match Window Treatments for an L Shaped Living Room & Dining Room

The art of home decor is one that takes time, expertise and plenty of trial and error until you achieve the look and feel you desire. From the floor plan to the color scheme, each room can have its own theme, its own way it welcomes and makes the owners and guests feel at home. Window treatments are in many ways the icing on the cake, and it can be something you get just right, or something that goes terribly wrong. The challenge increases with an L-shaped living room and dining room, but the good news is that for window treatments the unique shape gives you additional flexibility as you can use more than one style to complete the space. With the right plan, you can add detail and delight to this important space in your home.

Instructions

1. Determine how much you wish to spend.

2. Start looking at images and finished looks that appeal to you. Use magazines, furniture brochures, and fabric sample books. Use the "L" shape to try two different looks, if you have two sets of windows. Cut out the images from the books or magazines you like and tape to the desired area you are looking to treat. Allow one week for the images to "grow" on you.

3. Pick three styles you like the best. Ask yourself the following questions as living rooms and dining rooms have changed over the years. Is it a formal look I want to achieve? Are small children using the space? Is too much or too little sunlight and issue? What are the existing colors in the room that are permanent, such as paint, flooring, light fixtures? Write these answers down on a piece of paper so that they become part of your plan.

4. Decide on style, color and texture. Sometimes it's worth hiring a consultant who can help you narrow things down. Blinds generally give a modern look, so if you're trying to achieve a traditional living/dining room, try sheer curtains for light and privacy control, followed by traditional drapes.

Curtains and draperies can fade with the sun, so if you're selecting for a west facing room, make sure you're aware of the resistance of the material. Neutral is good. If you're not sure about style, select neutral colors so that the window treatments won't compete with your furniture or paint job.
