Decorating Ideas For A Modern Master Bedroom

Modern master bedrooms include clean lines, neutral colors and simple design.

Modern decor was introduced during the 1930s and consisted of a minimalist approach with clean lines, a neutral color palette and little-to-no accessories. The modern decorating style reemerged during the 1950s and 1960s, adding pops of deep or unexpected color to neutral palettes and shiny surfaces. Decorate your master bedroom with modern furnishings and decor if you feel most comfortable with simple, clean lines, neutral colors and minimal accessories.

Furniture

Simple furniture, particularly low-slung, such as platform beds with clean lines are common in modern bedrooms. The headboard can be simple and low, with nightstands that extend from the headboard or are a part of the headboard. Dressers or chests should complement the bed with clean lines and lack any extra ornamentation. Avoid unnecessary furniture, as modern decor only includes functional and necessary items. Modern furniture can be white, black, dark brown or light brown wood.

Colors

Monochromatic color schemes are common in modern decor. Use a light color, such as white or gray, if you want to attempt a monochromatic color scheme. Different shades of the color can add interest, while keeping with your monochromatic style. Light, neutral colors such as white, cream, beige or light gray can work by themselves or together for a modern bedroom. Add splashes of color in a dark, bright or deep color for contrast and design. For example, use a couple of lime green, burnt orange, chocolate brown or aqua pieces in the room. Any accent colors should invoke relaxed feelings for you and your mate, as your master bedroom is supposed to be your retreat from the rest of the world.

Walls

Paint the walls in a light color that complements your decor. Light cream, beige, gray or blue are common colors found in modern bedrooms. The walls can actually serve as a single focal point in your bedroom if you want to add a decorative accent without over-accessorizing the room. For example, paint the walls a light blue-gray color with a chocolate-brown design on one wall. Or paint one wall in your accent color, such as lime green, to make it stand out. Limit the rest of the room to light, neutral colors, including the walls. Place your bed against the accent wall if you go that route.

Floors

Smooth floors, such as hardwood or painted concrete, serve a modern master bedroom well. Add a white or cream-colored rug under the bed that gives you a soft place to rest your feet when you wake up or when you're getting ready for bed. If you can't update your floors, cover the carpet with a simple rug. Or use an area rug with an interesting design to serve as your accent piece.

Linens

Your bedding should complement the room. If you have a bright accent wall, stick with light, neutral bedding. Mix whites, creams and beige linens on your bed. Use different fabrics to add texture. Don't pile pillows onto your bed, but only place a few pillows that you actually use to stay true to modern design. Add a colorful throw folded neatly at the foot of the bed if you want to add a touch of color to your bed. Another option is to use your bed to showcase a decorative comforter with geometric designs, like a piece of art, instead of decorating the walls.
