Troubleshoot A Singlehandle Shower Faucet

SIngle-handle faucets may leak due to faulty cartridges.

Single-handle faucets are common in bathroom showers. The handle turns a cartridge that fits into the water control valve. The cartridge controls not only the amount of water flow but also the water temperature. Over time, the moving back and forth will cause the cartridge to wear down. This may cause a grinding sound or feel, and it may cause leaks around the base of the faucet handle. Troubleshooting will tell you whether the faucet needs replacing.

Instructions

1. Turn off the water to the bathroom by shutting off the home's water at the water main.

2. Pry off the cover of the faucet with a screwdriver or a pocket knife.

3. Remove the screw from the handle and pull the handle off the cartridge.

4. Inspect the end of the cartridge for wear. If it is slightly worn, wrap it with plumber's tape to give the handle something to bite into. Put the handle back on the cartridge and try turning it.

5. Pull the handle back off if the plumber's tape doesn't work, and inspect the washer if there is leaking. Remove the washer from the end of the cartridge and replace it if it is worn.

6. Remove the retaining clip from the cartridge if it is still leaking. Remove the cartridge with a wrench and inspect the valve behind it. If there is a lot of rust, call a plumber to have the valve replaced. If it is fine, replace the cartridge by sliding a new cartridge in place and putting all the components back in place in the reverse order of the way you took them apart.
