Change A Spark Plug Wire In A Contour

Changing the spark plug wires on a Ford Contour is not much different than any car out there. The procedure is not difficult, but you do have to pay strict attention to details so as not to mix up the wires and throw off the firing order. The spark plug wires are a critical component of the ignition system of your car, and the car will not run without them. The function of the spark plug wires is to carry high voltage electricity from the coil to the spark plug to allow it to fire in the cylinder, creating power and burning the fuel.

Instructions

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before working on or around the ignition system. Set the terminal off to one side, making sure it is not going to fall back and make contact with the battery.

2. Look for the coil pack or distributor on the top of your engine. Pick one spark plug wire and unplug it from the coil pack or distributor by gently turning it side to the side and pulling straight up. It is likely to come off with a slight popping noise, which is normal.

3. Trace the route of the wire all the way down to the spark plug. When you find the end, slightly pull out on the wire while twisting it from side to side and working it off the plug.

4. Using the old wire as a guide to find the correct wire in the new set. Put a small amount of boot grease (dielectric grease) on the inside of the boots and slide the boot gently over the spark plug, making sure it is fully seated.

5. Install the opposite end onto the open location at the coil pack or distributor, using just enough pressure to seat the boot. Set the old wire from this position aside.

6. Work your way around the distributor or coil pack until all the wires have been changed. Do not take more than one wire off at a time.

7. Reinstall the negative terminal on the battery and be sure it is secure. Start the car to verify that it is running correctly and all the cylinders are firing.

Tips Warnings

Always replace one wire at a time, so the firing order doesn't get mixed up.

Using dielectric grease will help prevent corrosion or the sticking of the wires to the spark plugs, and will make it easier to change them next time around.

Never work on the ignition system of any vehicle without first disconnecting the battery. The electricity carried from the coils to the spark plugs is extremely high voltage, and injury could occur if you come in contact with it.
