Repair An Eljer Shower Control

Reparing an Eljer stem.

If you are having trouble controlling either the temperature or the flow of your shower, then your shower stem has worn out. It's important to know whether you have a posi-temp faucet or a standard faucet. With a posi-temp faucet, you have to pull the stem out (or toward you) and then turn the handle to control the temperature. With a standard faucet, you will only have to turn the handle counterclockwise to turn on your shower.

Instructions

Removal

1. Turn off the shut-off valve beneath the sink.

2. Use an Allen wrench to unscrew the nut on the bottom of the handle.

3. Remove the screw in the center of the stem, so the stem can be removed. (Depending on the model of your faucet, there may or may not be a screw). The stem is the long brass piece that is exposed once the handle is removed.

4. Remove the old stem with a pair of pliers. You may have to turn the stem counter-clockwise to remove it.

Installation

5. Thread the new stem into the brass mixing valve that you removed the old stem from.

6. Reinstall the screw that holds the stem in place.

7. Place the shower handle onto the new stem and tighten the Allen night on the bottom, securing it in place.

Tips Warnings

Only an Eljer stem will fit into an Eljer mixing valve.
