Paint A Romantic Bedroom

Neutral colors soften a room's angles.

A fresh coat of paint can change your drab, cold bedroom into a romantic getaway. Regardless of your budget, painting the walls a soft, sensual color is a quick way to add a hint of romance to the room. Choose a paint color that means romance to you; it can be found in a favorite fabric, favorite rug or your lover's eyes. Requiring very few supplies and only a modicum of time, painting your bedroom can be done in a weekend.

Instructions

1. Select a paint color. Neutral tones, such as earthy tans and beige, coordinate well with bright accent colors, while warm tones, including red, yellow and spicy orange, create a sexy feel. Cool, relaxing tones include blue, soft green and light purple shades.

2. Prepare the room for painting. Remove any artwork, furniture and accessories from the room. Remove the covers from light switches and outlets. Cover floors and large furniture with canvas cloths. Cover any remaining hardware with painter's tape.

3. Prime the walls with a primer tinted the same color as the final color. Primer fills a wall's pores to create an even base for the paint. Sand the primer with 120-grit sandpaper and wipe it down with a damp sponge before painting.

4. Use a 2 1/2-inch angled brush to cut in paint around the perimeter of the room, along the ceiling and along trim molding. To cut in, apply paint about an inch from the edge of the wall. Turn the brush onto its bristles, pressing down on the longest bristles to form a point. Apply the brush point to the wall to create a clean line of paint where the wall meets the trim.

5. Dampen the paint roller by rolling it in water for latex paints or paint thinner for oil paints.

6. Dip the roller into a paint tray filled with paint, completely covering the roller.

7. Apply paint to the remainder of the walls with the roller in a W or M shape on the wall. Overlap vertical strokes, maintaining a wet edge between the strokes. Overlap roller strokes along the cut-in edges as well to blend the paint.

8. Apply a second coat of paint to the walls if desired.

9. Paint the trim with a straight-edged brush on wide moldings and a small sash brush for straight lines along the edge.
