Small Bathroom Concepts

Adding color to a small bathroom with neutral colors will make the space appealing.

A home or apartment with a small bathroom may mean you have to store some of your toiletries in the bedroom or that you're not quite sure decorate the bathroom with colors and decor items that won't take over the space. Making some major -- or minor -- renovations to your bathroom can make the area appear more spacious and turn the area into one of the most impressive parts of your living space.

Use Light Colors

Painting the walls with light colors will make the bathroom look bigger; intense and bold colors make the area seem closed in. Pastel shades are ideal for bathroom walls; warmer hues like dusty rose add a sense of comfort to the space, and cooler color choices like sea foam green or light blue give the bathroom a relaxed feel. You can also add lightly colored linens to the towel racks on the wall, or grace the bathtub with a lilac or light yellow shower curtain to make your small bathroom just a little more colorful and spacious.

Add an Accent Piece

Include an eye-catching piece in the bathroom to make the entire room more appealing; this way, the focus won't be entirely on the limited space of the bathroom. For instance, add a shower curtain with bright red and yellow patterns to break up the monotony of the white walls, or place a cobalt blue area rug in the center of the bathroom to offset the gray walls or counters. A large piece of artwork in a gold or silver frame, or a series of mirrors and sconces on the accent wall, draws the eye to the wall -- not to the rest of the bathroom's limited area.

Retile the Bathroom

Take the existing tiles out of the bathroom to add much smaller -- or larger -- tiles to the area. In a black and white bathroom, install black tiles to the floor to give the bathroom some height, or add tiny tiles in a light shade of gray or yellow so the area has a wider feel. Add tiles in a vibrant color to make the floor the most appealing part of the bathroom, such as magenta tiles in a black bathroom. Large tiles against the bathtub walls add height to bathrooms as well, and eye-catching hues in this area are a refreshing dose of color to the bathroom.

Add Attractive Storage

A small bathroom will likely have limited storage, so adding places to house the linens or display small decorations like potpourri and candles will give the bathroom a comfortable feel without taking up extra space. Dark wood shelves in a bathroom with brown or bronze accents are best; adding linens in a burst of color like lemon yellow or turquoise, along with black candles, is a temporary way to customize the bathroom until you're ready to change the color scheme. A small basket in the corner spray painted in the shade of your choice and filled with plush towels and synthetic flowers is a charming addition to the bathroom that won't take up too much room.
