Make A Contemporary Vintage Bedroom

Use antique accents to add a vintage look to your room.

Vintage décor can be whimsical and romantic. Fill your bedroom with pieces that have a rich history and culture but you don't want your room to look like a museum. It's easy to combine the old and the new with a contemporary vintage look. Modern colors and patterns with vintage accessories and accent pieces are a great way to make your bedroom vintage chic. And if you're a smart shopper it's a budget-friendly decorating style as well.

Instructions

1. Paint one accent wall a bright, modern color. This wall should be the main wall in the room, perhaps the one that your bed or TV sits against. Use a slate purple or slate blue, a bright green or blue, or even red. When choosing a color keep in mind the elaborate detail of vintage pieces and try to imagine each color as a backdrop. Also, make sure the color isn't so bold that it will take away from the other elements of the room.

2. Mix and match furniture, buying some pieces with simple lines and colors and others with a more distinct vintage look. For instance, pair a simple modern headboard with antique or vintage looking nightstands or a vintage desk or vanity. Make sure all the pieces use the same scheme or color palette. If you use too many variations your bedroom will begin to look like a thrift store.

3. Add a simple color comforter or duvet that coordinates with the wall, but be careful not to use something that is too bright. Add a few throw pillows with a modern pattern. Not only will this combine the modern look with the vintage headboard but you can also easily exchange these pillows at any time for a different pattern or color for easy redecorating.

4. Place a piece of vintage artwork on the wall. Use an actual painting of a scene from a different era or turn some of your personal photographs into black and white or sepia tone photos. If you have more modern artwork place the piece in a very vintage looking frame, perhaps one with distressed gold or a lot of detail.

5. Fill the room with vintage pieces such as a tea set from the 1950s, an antique vase filled with flowers, a retro lamp or rug, an older alarm clock, a rotary telephone or a bookshelf filled with classic novels.
