Traditional Dining Room Lighting

Dining room lights allow for easy conversation and interaction in the space.

Dining rooms are traditionally a formal space in the home, reserved for formal dinners and entertaining. Many families are relaxing the atmosphere by using the space for a family dining space. Combine a relaxed family atmosphere with formal elegance by hanging traditional lighting.

Traditional Choices

Traditionally, the most common choices for lighting in a dining room are chandeliers or pendant lights suspended over the dining room tables. These lights offer as many styles, shapes and colors as there are design styles. Choose one suited to the room's decor and the family's style.

Size

Since there are so many varieties of chandeliers and pendant lights available on the market, people often wonder what size light fixture is best suited to their room. Generally, it is best to choose a light whose diameter is 12 inches less than the width of the table.

Height

A pendant light or a chandelier should sit about 30 inches above the surface of the dining table. Be sure the light's height is comfortable for people sitting at the table and allows people to talk easily and move about the space.

Additional Lighting

While a single chandelier or pendant light is traditional, it is not the ideal way to light a dining room. Incorporate a chandelier or pendant light with recessed lighting, which will allow the whole room to be lit.
