Determine The Correct Rug Size For A Dining Room

Dining room rugs add elegance to the decor.

Area rugs come in a wide variety of styles, colors and sizes. They help balance a dining room area by creating continuity with the furniture and decor. Determining the correct size rug to buy for this type of room is not a difficult process. It is important that the rug extend beyond the dining room table. This is because when guests or family members scoot out their chairs to exit the table, the chairs should not have an uneven surface to slide across. It could lead to the chair tipping or the person falling.

Instructions

1. Measure the size of your dining room table with the measuring tape. Write down the length and width of the table. Take these measurements with you when purchasing the rug.

2. Pick out a dining room rug that extends at least 2 feet beyond the length and width measurement of the rug.

3. Allow at least 18 to 24 inches of the flooring to show around the perimeter of the room when you are determining the correct rug size. This is particularly important if you have attractive wood or marble floors that you want to show off. If you want to disguise old or worn flooring, purchase a rug that covers as much of the floor area as possible.

4. Look for rugs that are square or rectangle in shape if you have a table in this shape. This helps create unity and balance in the dining room area. Many dining rooms are in a rectangle shape. Round or oval-shaped rugs look more attractive with the table in the same shape.
