Build A Large Dining Room Table

Build a Large Dining Room Table

Building your own large dining room table can be a wonderful addition to your home. You can save yourself hundreds of dollars by tackling this project yourself. As an added benefit, you get the satisfaction of knowing that you created a piece of furniture in your house with your bare hands. Building your own dining room table requires patience and time but the rewards can be great once it's complete.

Instructions

1. Measure the dimension of your room and plan the length and width of your table accordingly. Ensure that your room is suitable to fit a 10 foot long table. If you want a larger table than this, then adjust the dimensions below according to your exact specifications and preferences. Use the saw to cut your piece of wood down to the desired size. You may also use two pieces of wood that measure 4-by-5-by-1. This piece (or pieces) will function as your tabletop. Set the table top aside for the moment.

2. Purchase wooden cable online. Cable reels are generally used to hold large amounts of electrical cable but they function wonderfully as support posts for dining room tables as well. They come in various shape and sizes but be sure to choose one that is made from wood and is at least 30 inches in diameter and 24 inches wide. The height should be based on your preferences for how tall you want the table to be.

3. Set the large piece of wood on top of the two cable reels and be sure the reels are in the center of the table both length- and width-wise, spaced around a foot apart from each other. Use your level to ensure that the table is straight and level. Hammer four 2-inch nails through the top of the large piece of wood into each of the two cables reels, spacing the nails out appropriately. Ensure that the table is sturdy by rattling it a few times and add any additional nails if necessary.

4. Use your saw to round out each of the four corners of the table if you deem it appropriate. Sand down the edges thoroughly until they're smooth. Sand down any additional rough areas on the table as well. Stain the entire table with a high gloss wood stain, applying multiple coats if necessary.
