Proper Height To Mount Bathroom Mirror

Many people have had the experience of having to stand on tiptoe or bend down to see clearly in a bathroom mirror. A simple step in making your home more comfortable and attractive to live in is to mount the bathroom mirrors at the correct height.

What to consider

When determining at what height you should mount your bathroom mirror, it is important to keep a few things in mind. The first is the height of the people who will be using the mirror every day. Because most of us do the majority of our grooming in the bathroom, it is important that every family member be able to see clearly up to and above the top of his or her head. Younger family members may need a mirror that is mounted lower as they learn to brush their own teeth and hair and keep their faces clean.

A second consideration is the height of the bathroom countertops and the height of the ceiling. A mirror that is mounted flush to the countertop, but has a large amount of wall space above it may look out of proportion compared to a mirror that is mounted with a more even distribution of space above and below it. This is especially true of today's decorator mirrors that are often enclosed in heavy frames.

Another element to consider applies mainly to mirrors that are mounted in the bathroom, but not above the sink and counters. These are often vertical mirrors and are mounted on the backs of doors or in clear wall spaces. The height of the family members is taken into account here as well, but the ability to view the head and shoulders may be less important than the ability to view a full suit of clothing and shoes. The mounting height for these mirrors is generally measured from the floor up. In order to determine the best height for a mirror like this for your family, hold the mirror up about six inches above the floor and have the tallest person in the family step back from the mirror about four feet. Raise and lower the mirror until he or she can see most or all of his or her body, including shoes. When the proper amount of the body can be seen in the mirror, measure the distance from the floor to the bottom of the mirror. This will be the distance up from the floor that the bottom of the mirror should be mounted.
