Slipcover A Dining Room Chair

Dining room chair slipcovers are an attractive way to decorate and protect your chairs from spills and other accidents. Slipcovers are easy to make at home. With a little practice, you can have different slipcovers for each season, adding a festive touch to holiday gatherings.

Instructions

Making a Slipcover

1. Measure the chair. Upholstery fabric is cut larger than other fabrics, so take your measurements to the store. Note the length and width of the backrest, as well as the depth of the seat. You'll need enough material to drape over the seat of the chair and the backrest, with the back edges sewn together.

Alternately, you could drape a sheet over the chair, pin to fit as desired, and then measure the pinned area, allowing an extra 1/2 inch for seams.

2. Drape the upholstery fabric over the chair. Pin the back edges of the fabric together, and verify that the pattern (if any) is centered or arranged in a pleasing way on the chair. Remove from the chair and sew the back edges together with a narrow seam so that the fit on the chair is kept relatively snug.

3. Check the fit on your chair, and add a fabric tie if desired, for visual appeal as well as to secure the slipcover. Cut two pieces of material long enough to make an attractive bow and attach them to the slipcover so they tie behind the back of the chair. Finish by sewing a narrow hem or a skirt to the bottom of the slipcover.

4. To add a skirt to the slipcover, sew it on after the slipcover has been fitted to the chair.

Decide on the length of the skirt you want for your chair, and add that measurement (with allowance for a hem) to the total fabric yardage. Measure around the outside edge of the chair for the width.
