Frame An Existing Bathroom Mirror

Framing bathroom mirrors gives the room an updated look.

Most bathrooms have large, plain mirrors attached to the wall by clips or adhesive. While they provide perfect functionality, these plain mirrors are not much to look at in terms of decor. Framing the existing bathroom mirror will enhance the mirror's appearance, and update the look of the bathroom. Any homeowner or DIYer can successfully frame the existing bathroom mirror easily and inexpensively.

Instructions

1. Measure the bathroom mirror's width and height with a measuring tape. Write these measurements down on paper to take with you to the home improvement store.

2. Select molding trim pieces in any desired design and shade that compliments the bathroom decor. Keep in mind that the wider the trim piece is, the less mirror surface you will have left.

3. Measure the molding trim pieces to size according to the mirror measurements, and mark with a pencil. Cut a 45-degree angle with a miter saw on the ends of the trim pieces. Make sure the angled ends match up together, with no large gaps or unevenness.

4. Sand the cut ends with fine-grit sandpaper until the edges are smooth. Wipe the trim edges with a clean rag to remove all sandpaper dust.

5. Paint or stain the molding trim with a paintbrush. Apply and allow the paint or stain to dry according to the stated package instructions. Use a paintbrush to apply an even coat of polyurethane to the molding trim. Allow to dry according to stated instructions.

6. Sand the entire surface of the molding trim with a fine-grit piece of sandpaper. Apply light, even pressure with the sandpaper, only sanding the top layer to smooth the roughness left behind by the polyurethane.

7. Squeeze epoxy adhesive onto the back of the first piece of trim. Place several dots of adhesive evenly spaced apart. Turn the trim piece over so the decorative side is facing you, and press the molding trim onto the top of the mirror. Apply gentle pressure to the trim piece for the time stated on the packaging. Repeat this procedure for the remaining three pieces of trim, aligning the angled edges precisely together. Allow the epoxy adhesive to cure and dry according to package instructions.

8. Apply a thin line of corresponding-colored wood putty into the corner angles. Smooth the putty into the trim pieces using your finger. You want to smooth the putty as best as possible to achieved a uniform appearance.
