The bathroom can be a haven for harmful bacteria if not properly sterilized and maintained. Fortunately, most household cleansers will deal with harmful bacteria. However, it is important to make sure that family members wash their hands after going to the bathroom, especially when they're using public toilets, which have a much lower sanitary level than most private bathrooms. Common bathroom bacteria induce stomach flu-like symptoms in infected people.
E-coli
E-coli is a very common bacteria that's normally in the feces and intestinal tracts of humans and most animals. Most strains of E-coli are harmless. However, a few strains produce toxins in the body and cause disease. The most common infection resulting from E-coli poisoning (STEC/VTEC) induces mild fevers, stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea, which usually will subside within a week. Other ways of becoming infected with harmful E-coli include eating raw beef, eating raw produce contaminated with animal feces, and being in proximity to someone who has the infection.
Salmonella
Salmonella can live inside the gut of both humans and animals. Salmonellosis (infection from salmonella) occurs when this bacteria is ingested. In bathrooms, this bacteria is commonly spread by people not closing the toilet lid before flushing and not washing their hands properly after using the toilet. Other ways of getting salmonella poisoning include eating raw or undercooked food (especially chicken) that has been contaminated by the bacteria, and handling animals. The symptoms of salmonella poisoning include stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and headaches. Most cases of salmonella poisoning will recede within one week or sooner.
Campylobacter
Also present in feces, this bacteria is commonly found growing in raw and undercooked poultry, and can be transferred through eating contaminated food and by hand-to-mouth transfer from infected people and surfaces. The symptoms of poisoning through the campylobacter bacteria include severe abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, headaches and diarrhea. The campylobacter is commonly found in puppies and kittens, so make sure that children who come into contact with these animals wash their hands and preferably take a bath and change clothes after coming into contact with puppies or kittens.
Streptococcus
Streptococcus is a common bacterium which can lead to streptococcus disease. While this is a common infection, it can on occasion lead to more serious health problems such as kidney disease or rheumatic fever. The most common ailment occurring from streptococcus infection is '"strep throat." The infection can largely be avoided, as with most of the infections from common bacteria in the bathroom, by following proper hygiene and washing hands, regularly changing hand towels, and using push applicators for liquid soap rather than soap bars for hand washing.
