Decorating Ideas For Twin Boys' Bedrooms

Find out what each boy likes when planning their bedroom decor.

When you need to put two children in one room, you need a plan. When those two children are twin boys, you need to find a way to treat them like individuals and address their particular likes and dislikes. All too often, twins are treated like a single entity, as in referring to them as "the twins." Fix that with a few clever decorating strategies.

Personalize

Use each child's name to personalize and decorate the room. Mount alphabet letters that spell out their names above each child's bed. The letters can be found in a craft store. Purchase either the wooden letters, papier mache or card stock cutouts.

Hang matching poster frames on the wall that have been filled with a picture collage of each child.

Personalize their pillowcases, shams or decorative pillows with fabric paint or embroidery. Having their names and photos of the boys displayed separates the twins into individuals.

Colors

Parents of twins often use color to differentiate the children. Adopt this same technique when you are decorating their bedroom. If each child is already assigned a particular color, you can use those colors to separate a shared room. You can either paint the walls a neutral color and use different bedding colors, or paint two walls for each boy. Some possibilities include combinations of primary colors--yellow and blue, red and blue or green and blue. Tie the room together by using bedding of the same colors.

Other ways of using color to decorate include alternating the paint color of every other shelf in a bookcase. Purchase different-colored hangers for the closet to separate the boys' clothes.

Beds

Boys who share a room still need their privacy. Provide a secret retreat even in a small shared space by setting up bed tents. Another way to accomplish this is to hang a curtain from the ceiling to the floor between their beds.

Beds

The first factor to consider when choosing beds for a bedroom for twin boys is the size of the room. Twin beds plus a nightstand for each, plus dressers and toys, just may not fit. In that case, look into a bunk bed or beds that have drawers underneath for clothing. This will open up more floor space in the bedroom.
