Use western style images to create your child's western-themed bedroom.
Cowboys, horses, cowhide and sheriff stars make a western-themed kids room complete. Use western symbols to decorate your child's walls and floors and to choose bedding. Knowing a few ideas on decorating your child's western-inspired room helps you decide the right design for you.
Bedding
Different western-themed bedding sets are available at children's stores and home goods stores. Choose from sets with cowboys, horses or a cow print. Look for blues, browns or even pinks as a color scheme. If you cannot find a bedding set you like, choose a solid color one, and use the shade you choose to create a color palette for the room. You can use a woven, western-style blanket for the bedspread.
Walls
Choose wall colors based on the bedding you selected. Either use exact color matches, or use the bedding color as a springboard for other complementary colors. Paint the walls a solid color, and stencil western-themed shapes on the walls, such as sheriff stars or cowboy outlines. For another option, use an overhead projector to project an image on the wall of a western scene, complete with cactus, cowboys and lassos. Use the projected image to trace a mural on the wall using chalk. Paint inside the chalk outlines with acrylic paints to add details to the picture.
Furniture
Add details to your existing furniture to tie it into the western style. Use acrylic paints to add cow spots to dressers, or paint horseshoes on the bed frame. Another option is new furniture. Choose natural, unfinished wood pieces that have wood knots in them, which hints at the split log fences of the old west. Or make an end table out of an old barrel, and use a round piece of plywood for the top.
Curtains
Many bedding sets offer matching accessories, such as window treatments. However, if you cannot find matching pieces or do not like the existing options, make your own. Purchase fabric with a western theme from your local craft store. Alternatively, purchase an extra sheet that matches your bedding set. Turn it into a valance for your window. Add western-shaped buttons, such as horseshoes or cowboy boots, to the valance to finish the look.
Final Touches
Add accents to the room with western-themed accessories. Place a cowhide rug on the floor, or throw it over a blanket rack. Hang cowboy hats on the wall. In a girl's room, use a cowboy boot as a vase for silk flowers. Use sheriff stars to create curtain ties. Small toy horses may be placed on a shelf, or you can place stuffed horses on the bed to finish the look.
