Painting a kid's room is fun. You are helping to create an atmosphere that stimulates the imagination. Girls' room colors are commonly different than boys' room colors, but don't let stereotypes stop you from creating the ideal room with colors your love.
Wall Colors
Before you start picking colors for your child's room, sit down with him and ask about his favorite colors. Involving your child in the process will help ensure he loves the end result.
Go through magazines and crayon boxes to determine what the first choices are. Once you know the child's basic desires, you can make adjustments. For example, if your child chooses a bright yellow, you can mute it to a more pastel color that softens the room while brightening it up. Children rarely can imagine their ideal color in an entire room.
You don't need to stick with traditional pinks for girls and blues for boys. You may want to just have a contrast wall that livens up the space. Remember that lighter pastels won't overstimulate their senses like a room of primary colors will.
Trim
How you paint the trim in the room can greatly affect the finished look. When doing this, think about how the furniture and accessories will complement the finished look. It is important to consider the furnishings as well as the color.
If your child is a fan of a particular sports team, you may consider accenting the walls with the team colors and match any sports posters and memorabilia in the room.
A great kid's room uses a simple base color for the walls, such as an off-white or eggshell color, and then adds bold, bright colors for trim. If your walls are a more bold base color, use lighter trim to prevent it from being too dark.
Special Designs
Kids love unique rooms. One of the surest ways to do this is to paint a mural on one or more of the walls. You can use an overhead projector to project favorite cartoon characters onto the wall where you can trace and paint them. You can also be creative and make a cloud wall or ocean scene. Your child will get lost in her imagination, soaring through the clouds or having deep sea adventures. For kids who love playing army, a camouflage wall can be accessorized with items from an Army surplus store. This will excite any little GI Joe.
