Make Funky Teen Bedrooms

Add some style to a teen bedroom.

For creative, inspiring teen bedroom decor, put the funk in functional. Abandon those catalog- and showroom-perfect designs for something with more kick, color and personality. The process begins by brainstorming with your teenager to make sure the funky bedroom makeover is a collaborative project. Whether you have more time than money or the budget for a complete bedroom makeover, remember to keep the key pieces relatively neutral so you can change the look quickly and cheaply when your teenager's aesthetic tastes mutate with the latest trend.

Instructions

1. Clear out the space. Nothing kills the look of a funky bedroom makeover more than piles of clothes and clutter. Your teenager should sort through everything to determine what to sell, recycle, donate, store or repurpose into something new.

2. Set the tone with color and finishes. If you want to paint, a two-tone finish has a funky, bohemian look. Mango orange and fuchsia evoke an Indian palace, while Caribbean blues and greens transport you to a gorgeous beach. Go urban industrial with stone gray, steel blue and silver accents, or make it more Gothic with black and blood red. A wallpaper mural on one or two walls might feature crashing waves, a graffiti-sprayed wall, abstract blobs or Japanese cartoons. For equal impact with less investment, adhere vinyl wall decals across the length of a wall.

3. Abandon themes. Matching furniture and obvious themes sap the soul and personality out of teen bedroom decor. Have fun mixing and matching eye-catching pieces culled from flea markets, thrift shops, yard sales and the attic.

4. Beautify bedroom decor with textiles. Simple wood furnishings get a face lift with scatterings of patterned throw pillows, floor cushions, wall hangings, window treatments and bedding in paisley, abstract patterns, geometric designs, ethnic motifs, mod graphics and retro patterns.

5. Personalize a teen bedroom interior with DIY projects. Cover a corkboard with vintage fabric, bright wrapping paper or Japanese stationery and hang it over the desk. Paint old wooden drawers bright colors and nail them to the wall for use as niches or shrines. Stack books by the bed to serves as a nightstand. Dedicate a wall to a mashup of photographs, art postcards, doodles and drawings, or hang them from a fishing line strung across a corner.
