Bathroom Makeovers On A Budget

Making over an entire room can be a financial burden, especially when it comes to the bathroom. Some faucets and shower heads alone can cost upward of $1,000, and a complete makeover can cost upward of $3,000. But if you don't have that kind of budget, you can still make your bathroom look a more polished even if it means making over just certain aspects of the bathroom to give it a little more edge.

Overall Theme

Before beginning your project, think about your overall theme. Decide what you want to makeover and plan a budget before making your first purchase. You may want to draw a sketch of your overall plan first. If you're looking to paint the room, get some paint sample colors at your home supply store. Hold them up to the wall or even purchase a small can or two and paint a small strip. Examine how it looks in several lights.

Screw on New Knobs or Pulls

One way to bring in the new is to screw on a new set of knobs and pulls that goes with your overall design. Select a set or mix and match. You can find pulls for $10 or less at your local hardware store, or online at MyKnobs (See Resources below). This will provide a sleek new look for your bathroom and they are simple to install.

Trim in Wallpaper

An alternative to wallpapering the entire bathroom is to purchase some wallpaper trim. Place it at the top of the walls under the ceiling. Add a line of trim in the middle of the wall for extra flair.

Paint

Have a couple friends come over and help you repaint your bathroom. Purchase paint at your local home supply store. Although paint can be expensive, if you purchase returned paint cans, you can save a few bucks. They may already be open, but it will reduce the overhead quite a bit. Line the top of the wall and the bottom of the wall with painter's tape to keep your paint job smooth.

Paintings and Pictures

Purchase prints of your favorite vintage celebrities and other art at places like Target, WalMart or Big Lots. You can also look for reprints of your favorite pieces at local art stores or Art.com (Resources 3). Although frames can be a bit pricey, go to your local thrift store to find cheap frames that complement your artwork.

New Faucets and Showerheads

While designer faucets and shower heads are priced at the highest end, you can find off-brand designs at your local home supply store or websites like Faucet.com (Resources 1) for under $200, and in some cases even under $100. A new shower head or faucet will give your bathroom an updated and polished look.
