Public restrooms often smell because of over-use and poor cleaning.
Nearly everyone has had to use a public restroom at one time or other. And, often we leave those restrooms holding our nose because of the strong smells often included in the experience. Public restrooms are often cleaned infrequently and are used more often than home bathrooms. This can lead to a serious odor problem and could also be a way to pass bacteria from person to person.
Cause
Public bathrooms often smell because they are not cleaned as often or as thoroughly as home bathrooms. They are also used more and by people who do not take the time to clean up after themselves. All of this leads to odor.
Solution
One way to reduce the odor coming from public restrooms is to clean more thoroughly. Using bleach and high-quality cleaning products could eliminate the odor for longer time periods. Using these products on the floor, sink area and toilets could help improve the overall smell of the bathroom.
Improve Air Quality
But not all restroom odor means it is unclean. Often public restrooms are poorly ventilated, which can lead to the build-up of odor. An air freshener can improve the smell caused by stuffy restrooms. Air freshening toilet products last up to 60 days, so they will need to be replaced regularly to continue working.
Public Responsibility
Anyone using a public restroom should clean up after themselves or notify an attendant if something is wrong with the restroom. Often, messes go unnoticed and can increase the foul smell of public restrooms.
Public Safety
An unclean public restroom should be reported. Bacteria can cause diseases if not cleaned properly and a dirty public restroom could contribute to the spreading of illnesses. If you report the dirty restroom to the attendant but find nothing is being done, consider contacting the state's health department to voice your concerns. Public cleanliness and safety should be everyone's concern.
