Starting from scratch is a fun way to decorate.
Decorating your bedroom is a way to express your personality. Whether you're a knee-jerk nonconformist, a vampire freak, a retro fashion goddess, a wannabe jungle explorer, or just find typical "girl" decorating styles boring, these ideas will help you think outside the usual selection of styles considered feminine.
Mayan Temple
The Maya were superbly skilled artisans, as their ruins reflect that.
If you want to be Indiana Jane or are fascinated with ancient Mesoamerica, transform your room into a jungle-choked temple ruin. Paint one a full-size mural of an ancient temple, borrowing inspiration from actual carvings at a Mayan ruin such as Copan. Paint the other walls green. Get fast-growing vine plants and hang them in stone or faux-stone containers. Choose wood furnishings. Hang a mosquito net over your bed to round out the feeling of being an intrepid archaeologist tramping around in the jungle.
Vampire Hunter
Don't worry--dry garlic doesn't smell strongly.
Tack a braid of dried garlic over your doorframe to broadcast to visitors that you take vampire prevention seriously. Wrap a rosary around the doorknob. Put up a sign identifies you as a professional vampire hunter. Hang posters depicting movie vampires: Dracula from old movies and modern remakes, Edward Cullen and the rest of the Cullen family from "Twilight," and Lestat from "Interview with the Vampire." Paint thick red circles with slashes through them over each vampire. Let the red paint drip down the poster to suggest blood dripping from a fang wound.
Time Warp
Retro furnishings are often brightly colored.
If you gravitate toward retro decor or the history and culture of a certain era, such as the 1970s or 1940s, recreate it inside your bedroom. Turn skirts or T-shirts from that era into cool pillows. Fill a small, prominent shelf with vintage books. Paper the walls with a vintage wallpaper print. Cover an entire wall with posters advertising the top movies of the decade, such as "Lawrence of Arabia," "Bonnie and Clyde," "Doctor Zhivago," and "Mary Poppins."
