Compromising on details, such as the color scheme and theme, is important, especially when the bathroom is shared by a boy and girl. Opt for unisex decor, or decor that appeals to both genders. Create a spunky bathroom or a calming room, depending on the style and personality of the people who use it.

1. Paint the bathroom in a neutral color that complements your theme. For example, a pale blue, cream, light green, beige, yellow or burnt orange color work for both genders. Pick a gender-neutral theme for a boy and girl, such as frogs and princesses, rubber ducks or ocean themes.
2. Hang towels that complement the style of the bathroom. A spa-like bathroom might have plain white towels, an elegant bathroom might include white monogrammed towels with beige embroidery or a playful bathroom might include lime green and yellow towels. Roll towels on shelves or in baskets to keep them close-at-hand.
3. Implement decorative storage in the bathroom. Baskets can sit on shelves and hide little day-to-day hygiene items. Alternatively, use colorful plastic bins or clear jars to hold the things you don't mind exposing, such as cotton balls.
4. Place a slip-free rug in front of the bathtub and sink. Solid colors are best for reserved spaces, while colorful rugs or interesting shapes might be best in a kid's bathroom.
