Choosing paint colors for a tween's room can be fun because there are so many options to get creative. Explain to your tween that once painted, the color will look different on the wall than it will in the paint can or on the paint chip. Select three colors and purchase small samples of each. Then paint squares of each color on the walls in different places. Check the colors in the morning, mid-day and at night. You and your tween may be surprised at what you see. Decide between the two of you what colors you think will go best in the room and with the rest of the room decor and furniture.
Black
When it comes time to paint their room, some tweens want to paint it black. This can be a scary thing for a parent, and the typical answer is "no." However, there are ways to work with the color black. It can look very sophisticated and modern when combined with the right accessories.You can also use chalkboard paint. It is a grayish/black color that can be painted on the walls, making them a chalkboard. Black can be combined with other colors to create a contrast and to brighten the room.
Bright colors
Bright colors will create a vibrant feeling in the room. Bright colors can be painted on all of the walls, or if you do not want the walls, just paint one focal wall the bright color and the rest a muted shade of the bright color. You can also use the brighter shade with another part of the room decor (such as the bedspread and pillows).
Murals
Another way to decorate a tweens room is by painting a mural on a wall. A mural will not only make the theme of the room more apparent, but it will create a piece of art as well. Use murals to make a room look like a garden or to paint a figure of an athlete. One example is to paint the silhouette of a surfer in blue and white (using blue as the silhouette color instead of the traditional black). Discuss design options and themes with your tween.
