Hang shelves and hooks to increase the storage in a small room.
Even the smallest bedroom can become a welcoming haven, provided it is clean and well-organized. Using closets, shelves and hooks will help maximize your storage space, but removing clutter will help you streamline your room and focus on finding a place for everything. Don't overlook under-bed storage. Even a single bed takes up about 18 square feet of floor space; using the area underneath allows you to maximize your room's storage potential. Once your room is organized, you will have a calm haven to relax in at the end of a busy day.
Instructions
Clean and Declutter
1. Start at the door and work your way around the room in a clockwise circle. Pick up any obvious trash and throw it into the trash bag. Items that are definitely trash include food wrappers, old papers you no longer need, items that are broken beyond repair and old food items.
2. Strip the bed and place the sheets and pillowcases in the laundry.
3. Pile any clothing that is on the floor on top of the bed for sorting.
4. Make another circuit of the room and look for items that do not belong in the bedroom. Look for cups, glasses, plates, DVDs, art supplies, books and anything else that does not belong in the bedroom. Place these items in one of the cardboard boxes and write "Other Rooms" on the box with the marker.
5. Go around the room one more time and evaluate the remaining items. Decide if there are any pieces you can give away. "Giveaway" items can include outgrown or out-of-date clothing, shoes and accessories you no longer wear, books and other items you are done with. Place these in the remaining cardboard box and use the marker to label it "Give Away."
6. Remove the cardboard boxes and trash bag from the room. The remaining items should all be in good repair and belong in the bedroom.
Sort and Store
7. Remove the clothing from the bed and place it in the laundry, in the correct drawer or on a hanger in the closet.
8. Sort the remaining objects into piles. Depending on your personal preferences, you may have many piles or only a few. Put all books together, all CDs together and all accessories together.
9. Select a storage location for each pile of belongings. If you only have three books, then you don't need to use an entire shelf for your collection. If you have 300 books, they should be sorted by type and placed on bookshelves.
10. Place items you use every day on the dresser or nightstand. Your alarm clock, iPod bay, computer and other essential items can be placed neatly on a desk or dresser for easy retrieval. Continue sorting and storing until all items have a place.
11. Make the bed with fresh linens, and vacuum then dust the room.
