Uses For An Unused Dining Room

A music room is a great idea for an unused dining room.

Unless you are celebrating a holiday or have many formal dinner parties, a dining room tends to go unused for much of the year. But you don't have to let the dining room become wasted space. Get creative while taking into consideration a space you will really use in your home.

Home Office

The kitchen table should be used as an eating surface and not a home office. Create your home office in your unused dining room. Place a desk and chair that will fit comfortably in the space. Add bookshelves to one wall and you have the makings of a home office. File cabinets come in a variety of sizes and colors to match the d cor you have chosen. A few pictures on the wall and shelves give the home office an inviting and relaxed atmosphere conducive to working at home.

Music Room

It is important to have the right acoustics in a music room. If your dining room has hardwood floors, add an area rug to ward off some of the echo the hardwoods produce. If the room is carpeted, add glass top tables or shelves to ward off dullness of sound the carpeting produces. The lighting in a dining room is a great asset for a music room as overhead lighting is just right to read music. Place music stands in the room for easy access, create shelves to hang instruments and include a comfortable chair to sit and listen to the music.

Library

Bookshelves are the keys to a successful home library. Take into consideration the size of your room when planning the amount and size of bookshelves to create a library. A settee and relaxing chair are library essentials. Overhead lighting common in dining rooms tends to be too harsh for a library, so use floor lamps instead. If you don't have a large collection of books to start your library, you can place knickknacks that complement the d cor of the room on the shelves.
