Small Bathroom Ideas With Photos

Small bathrooms, the bane of studio apartments and older one-bedroom homes, don't have to feel claustrophobic. It isn't necessary, either, to hire a contractor for an expensive remodeling project to expand your tiny bathroom. All you have to do is inject some creativity to your small bathroom to gain the look and feel of a bigger space.

Glass and Mirrors

See-through walls and mirrored reflection create the look of more space.

Glass shower enclosures create the illusion of more space. Install glass block in an outside wall to allow light in, while still having precious wall space to use for decorating or storage. Unique Vanities suggests hanging a large mirror over your vanity to create a perception of depth. Two small mirrors, facing each other on opposite walls, lead to the illusion of an endless room.

Storage

Keep bathroom items off the vanity to avoid clutter.

Use floating storage, such as a vanity mounted to the wall rather than the floor, to take up less space. Remove doors from the middle third of a full-length storage cabinet so the room can be viewed wall to wall.

Look to the ceiling for storage. Mount a hook in the ceiling over the back of the bathtub to hang a vanity stool when not in use.

Use wall space to organize mirrors, blow dryers, razors and curling irons. Mount shelving, wire baskets and hangers to bathroom walls.

Décor

Dainty decor surrounds items used in small bathrooms.

Don't start your day in a dark bathroom. Use several types of light in different areas, such as the shower, tub or over the mirror. The light defines and sections off the small bathroom without barriers. Types include overhead, skylights, recessed, wall-mounted and hanging task lights.

Choose warm colors to make a small space seem larger. Pastel colors seem relaxing in the bathroom. Vivid colors give lift to a small space. Small Bathroom Makeovers suggests using colors similar to those in your master bedroom or different colors for a distinctive look."

Incorporate common bathroom accessories into the décor. Towel, rugs and bath mats add a splash of color. Build a theme through bathroom décor, using such motifs as wildlife, floral and stripes, by adding a soap dispenser, tumbler, waste basket and even a toilet seat.
