Shared Bedroom Ideas

Bunk beds help to maximize the space.

Planning and decorating a shared bedroom space can be a difficult task, as it can be difficult to create a look that both inhabitants like and provide them with their own space. Showcase each person's interests with decor and bring in room dividers to split up the space. Maximize the area by using space -saving furniture and provide ample storage to reduce clutter.

Beds

The most effective way to free up floor space in a shared bedroom is with bunk beds. You can choose the traditional style of bunk beds, where the beds are stacked on top of one another and lay in the same direction, or you can arrange the beds so that they are perpendicular to one another. If you go with the second arrangement, a dresser or a desk can be placed in the excess space underneath the raised bed, providing even more floor space for the dwellers. With either arrangement, choose a bottom bed that has built-in drawers for added storage. You can still allow for individuality in a room that features bunk beds by painting the walls behind each person's bed in a color that he chooses, or by making the beds with different linens.

Dividers

If the room inhabitants prefer to separate their living space, dividers and storage items can help you to do so. Place a movable screen between the two beds to split up the space or build a partition or a half wall in the middle of the room. Place two bookshelves or tall dressers back to back between the beds to divide the room, and provide each person with storage. Another way to divide the space is with area rugs. Have each room inhabitant select an area rug that speaks to her and place the rugs on their respective sides of the room.

Storage

Storage is of utmost importance in a shared bedroom, yet you don't want the storage to take away from the living space. Use decorative boxes and containers to store items under the beds. Use the walls as storage space by hanging shelves on them. Install closet organizers to get the most out of the room's closet space. Even the back of the door can be turned into a storage space with over-the-door shoe organizers, which can be used to hold not only shoes, but craft supplies, jewelry and other accessories.

Decor

There are two options when decorating a shared bedroom: choose a theme that interests both individuals, or showcase each person's individuality. For instance, if both people like the great outdoors, showcase their love for nature by painting the walls a natural color that they both like and bringing in rustic furniture and accessories. If they'd prefer to display their individuality in the room, have each person pick a color that she likes, but try to have her pick colors that complement one another to provide the room with some sort of cohesiveness -- purple and pink or blue and green, for example. Display pictures and accessories that highlight their individual interests.
