Cheap Ways To Decorate A Girl'S Bedroom

Decorating a girl's bedroom often brings to mind big dollar signs. If you're on a limited budget, you'll enjoy hearing that you can make over a little girl's room without going broke. By making strategic changes and making use of the current decor, the bedroom will have a new look and you can still afford to buy groceries or pay the light bill. Whether you choose a theme for the room or go with a general girl theme, involve your daughter in the process as much as possible.

Bedding

Choose a general bedding set rather than a decorative, themed set. By choosing a solid color or a basic print, you can reuse the bedding set even if the room's theme changes in a few years. This thrifty move will save you down the road. Solid bedding sets are also typically less expensive than themed bed sets, so you'll save money up front as well. Add some inexpensive pillows that match the room's theme to tie it all together.

Walls

A coat of paint is one of the most affordable ways to refresh a girl's bedroom. Choose a color scheme for the room. Using the lightest color from the selected palette keeps the room from feeling smaller. It also allows other wall decorations to become focal points instead of getting lost on dark colored walls.

Consider decorative paint techniques to add interest. Ideas include painting multi-colored stripes or polka dots on the wall. You might also paint the lower half of the walls one color and the top half a different color. A mural is another inexpensive paint technique if you handle the work yourself. An overhead projector allows you to trace the mural design on the wall. Once it's sketched, simply fill in the outlines with paint to complete it.

Furniture

The furniture is often one of the most expensive aspects of a bedroom makeover. If the current furniture is solid, give it a coat of paint to make it look new. White is a common color for bedroom furniture, but it's also boring for a child's room. Add some color to the furniture to make it more child-friendly. One simple idea is to paint each drawer on the dresser a different color that complements the other decor in the room.

If the existing furniture isn't in good condition, check out consignment shops, auctions and garage sales. You can often find great deals on furniture that just needs a quick face lift.
