Small Bedroom Remodel Ideas

Remodel a small bedroom into a multiple-use room that is also a sleeping chamber.

Remake your small bedroom into a multiple-use and comfortable space by minimizing the bed as the primary room focus. Some redesign ideas work best for single or twin beds. Others are well-suited to couples who sleep in doubles or queens. If you can't find the furniture needed to complete a remodel vision, create the design and have it custom made or make it a do-it-yourself project.

Murphy Bed Wall Units

Murphy beds fold down from a cabinet or are built-in. There are even Murphy bed bunk beds. Customize the underside of a fold-down bed by installing a flat screen television. When the bed is folded up, the room becomes a TV room, which can convert to a bedroom in seconds.

Bunk-over Design

Need space for a desk and chair, storage cabinet or even a second bunk over a Murphy bed? Buy or build a loft bunk bed with computer workspace below it, a curtained child's playroom, dresser drawers and storage cabinets or second clothes closet.

Daybed with Trundle

A daybed can be whimsical or elegant, look like a leather sofa or platform bed, and hide a second bed beneath it. Build one into a bookshelf alcove to turn a small bedroom into a private library by day, and room for two by night.

Closet Bunks or Workspace

If the room has a reach- or walk-in closet, convert the closet by building in two narrow ship-like bunks or loft bunk with office or storage below. Conversely, turn the walk-in closet into a library or TV nook, and build a closet under the loft bunk effectively expanding the livable space of the room.

Loft Bed or Living Area

If the room has a high ceiling or a steep pitched roof, build a loft for a platform or free-standing bed, beanbag chair TV space or computer work and play area. A loft area can also be used for storage to free up closet space for other uses. Conserve floor space below by using a collapsible loft ladder for access.

Futon Sleeping

Turn the room into a peaceful Zen-like living space using rice paper screens and mirrors on the walls to give the illusion of windows and space. Integrate a bonsai garden to bring the outdoors in, and utilize Japanese-style futon beds or mats to maximize the sleeping area and create the ambiance of a Japanese home.
