Organize & Decorate Small Master Bathrooms

Mirrors make a small bathroom look larger.

Even some sizable homes lack spacious bathrooms and smaller homes, apartments and condos almost always have small master bathrooms. Remodeling to add space to master bathrooms in these types of dwellings, as a rule, means losing precious space for other necessary purposes, and can also be prohibitively expensive. Instead of gutting out and completely rearranging your master bathroom's layout, decorate and organize your small master bathroom to both visually and functionally expand the space.

Instructions

1. Paint your walls a light or dark neutral color. Both light and dark color colors tend to pull away from the eye, creating more distance, while bold, bright hues bounce at the eye, causing the opposite effect. A master bathroom should be a place to retreat, like the rest of the suite, and neutral tones work well for this too, since they soothe eye. Choose a glossy paint, which will resist moisture and reflect light.

2. Install shiny tiles, preferably tiles with a subtle iridescent sheen. Shiny tiles reflect more light, and a brighter room looks larger. Shiny tiles also add glamour to your master bathroom.

3. Install vertical storage elements, such as shelves or boxes. The more storage you keep away from the floor, the larger your master bathroom will look. Put in enough shelving to suit all your needs: you'll want a place for rolled towels, toiletry caddies and containers for small essentials like cotton balls or pumice stones. Choose matching, floating shelves that can serve a decorative purpose as well as a functional purpose.

4. Attach rods and hooks to the back of your bathroom's door. Hang your necklaces, belts or small towels from the hooks, and drape your towels over the towel bars. Use two or three rows of towel bars to maximize the space, and hang a bathroom caddy from one for extra storage.

5. Hang a group of mirrors. Mirrors create the illusion of extra space in small areas, and they are necessary anyway for your master bathroom, which you probably also use as a dressing area. Boxy, framed mirrors can even create the illusion of a window. Install a mirror-faced medicine cabinet over your sink.

6. Edit out excess accessories. Focus on keeping just a couple of stand-out accessories. An uncluttered space feels larger.
