What Is A Master Bedroom

The master bedroom is the main bedroom in the house.

It can be said that the master bedroom represents the home within the home -- it reflects the homeowner's decorating style in a more intimate and personal way than is evident in other parts of the house. Although it's one of the primary rooms people look at when buying a home or renting an apartment, it adds more than just resale value to the home. A well-appointed master bedroom encourages people to unwind at the end of the day.

Trends

In recent years, the master bedroom has expanded the way that it expresses its identity as the principle bedroom in the house. According to David Lupberger of the site Service Master, the trend in master bedrooms is to create the master suite.

More than just having a bathroom off of the master bedroom, the master suite includes features that are typically associated with the rest of the house, such as a sitting area, and some even include a private patio off the bedroom. This space offers a retreat to homeowners at the end of the day and helps to make their lives more self-contained.

Decorating

Like the rest of the home, the decor should reflect the personality of the homeowners as well as follow the basic guidelines of good decorating principles. Because this functions as such an all-in-one room, the homeowner should carefully consider the selection of lighting. For example, a chandelier brings not only decorative elegance to a bedroom but also provides a general light source. Bedside lamps bring task lighting to the space and candles provide ambiance.

Other decorative elements to consider include locating a focal point in the room --- this is usually the bed --- and setting up other areas like a desk or coffee nook in the corner. These elements make the master bedroom more personal and help it fit its role as the home's main bedroom.

Home Staging

The only time a homeowner would not want to add a lot of decorating to the master bedroom is when he is trying to sell his home. The master bedroom is one of the main attractions for a home buyer, and the potential buyer must be able to see herself occupying the home's principle bedroom. In this instance, master bedroom staging becomes important, according to the "Home Staging Channel." When the primary goal is to sell the house, the master bedroom must lose some of its personality and become more neutral. This allows the buyer to see herself occupying the home and filling the main bedroom with her belongings instead of trying to imagine what the room would look like without the homeowner's personalized belongings in it.
