Extend A Dining Set

Expand your dining set to meet your needs.

Whether you are expecting a few extra guests during the holidays or just need some extra table space, there are several ways you can extend the surface area of your dining set. If you have an extending table, you already have the option of inserting the leaves. You also can purchase table extension pads to put over the top of the table and beyond. Finally, if you want a low-budget solution, you can always use card tables or other surfaces for table space.

Instructions

1. Pull apart your extending table to insert the leaves, the matching rectangular pieces that came with your dining set. Have one person stand at each end of the table. Grasp the ends of the table and pull to create an opening in the center. Insert the leaves. Depending on the table, you might have one to four leaves. Insert the number you need to accommodate your guests. Push the table ends toward the center to snug the leaves in place. Return the table to its original size by reversing the process.

2. Install table extension pads, available online or from furniture and furniture accessory retailers. Place the pads over the top of the table to extend the surface while providing a uniform look on its surface. Install the adjustable support legs that come with the pads, to hold up the ends of the pad that go past the edge of your table.

3. Be creative and use other surfaces. Card tables are a natural choice because they are inexpensive and fold up for tight storage. This option only works well, however, if you do not mind having two or more separate surfaces. If you do push two or more tables together to make one surface, make sure they are the same height. Create a more uniform look by covering them all with a long tablecloth.

4. Bring in extra chairs. There is no use in all the extra table space if no one can sit at it.
