Begin Painting A Bedroom

Good preparation for painting saves time and effort.

Applying new paint to a bedroom is one way to freshen the entire look of the room. Almost anyone can buy a few cans of paint and some brushes and paint a room; however, preparation is an important step. Good preparation helps ensure you can do the job with as few complications as possible and make it look as if a professional did the job.

Instructions

1. Move the bed and all other furniture pieces either to the center of the room or out of the room completely. Cover furniture that must stay in the room with plastic tarps or plastic sheeting to protect it from paint splatters.

2. Bring all your painting supplies into the room, placing them in the corner you will start in. This includes cleaning supplies, such as a bucket of soapy water, and clean rags to tend to accidental spills and drips.

3. Open windows to the bedroom to supply fresh air. Cover the floor in drop cloths or tarps to protect it from paint. Wipe the walls with dry dust cloths to remove surface dust.

4. Pour paint primer into your paint rolling pan. Apply the primer with a fine- to medium-nap paint roller. Primer helps paint stick to any surface much better. Allow the primer to dry completely. If you are doing this in the evening, leave it overnight and it should be totally dry and ready for painting in the morning. Rinse the rolling pan when you are finished to remove the primer.

5. Open your can of paint and stir it gently with a paint stirrer. Now, set up your ladder and make sure it is sturdy on the floor. When the ladder is secured, put on safety goggles and pour paint into the paint roller pan. Dip a paintbrush into this and climb the ladder.

6. Paint the edge of the wall along the ceiling and the corner using the paint brush. Climb down from the ladder and roll the paint roller in the paint.

7. Roll the paint over the wall from the corner, creating an "N" shape and then filling it in. Doing it this way helps prevent noticeable roller marks. Keep going, dipping the roller back in the rolling pan when necessary, until you've covered at least one entire wall.
