Design A Japanese Bedroom

Design a Japanese Bedroom

Japanese style is tranquil, serene and filled with a simple beauty that is calm and relaxing. In other words, it's a perfect design choice for a bedroom getaway. This sophisticated look is not easily achieved, however, because it requires a complete elimination of clutter and ornate decoration, something that can be difficult in many of today's bedrooms. Fortunately, once the design is realized, it offers a timelessly modern look and sense of serenity that never goes out of style.

Instructions

1. Choose a color palette. Incorporating colors common in Japanese decor will instantly add a hint of Japanese style to your room. Good choices to consider are off-white and other neutral colors, with accents of red or gold. Black, while considered a non-color in the Western design world, is very important for adding definition and dimension in Japanese design and should be freely used.

2. Look for Asian-inspired furniture with clean, smooth lines. Black or red lacquer, dark mahogany or natural wood are great finishes to consider. Because the bed is the natural focal point of the room, it is an important design decision. When looking for Japanese-style furniture, consider a well-built platform bed to add understated drama.

3. Minimize clutter. Japanese design is all about clean lines and simplicity. Remember, less is more. Use two or three large furniture pieces and no more than a handful of art pieces and accessories. Empty space is just as important to Japanese design as the items that fill the room.

4. Use texture as an element, adding a layer of design without clutter. Woven wicker, chunky bamboo and smooth silk linens can all play important roles.

5. Bring nature inside. Organic accessories such as orchids, bamboo and polished stones are common in Japanese decor. Used sparingly, these items can help turn your bedroom into a peaceful haven.
