Decorate A Dark Green Bedroom

Prime walls with a white primer or a tinted primer for the best paint performance.

The versatility of dark green affords numerous decorating options for gender-neutral or gender-specific bedrooms. From classic neutrals or bold modern colors to hunting, fishing or pub themes, various shades of green complement many decor schemes. Use dark green paint as an accent rather than the primary color to avoid making the room too dark. Break up solid green walls with chair rails, wainscoting, stripes or a mural. Green accent walls, borders and wallpapers add depth to the design and expand your decorating options.

Instructions

Planning

1. Create a color palette based on the central theme or motif for the room. A nature or camouflage-oriented palette will require taupes, olive, khakis and browns, while a room styled like a billiards hall encompasses more vibrant colors like reds, yellows, blues and black.

2. Sketch an overall design for the room. Use grid paper or graph paper for a scale mockup or use plain paper for a more general idea. Assemble paint chips, fabric samples and other details for the room for a better visualization of the finished design.

3. Use versatile items for your large pieces, particularly furniture. This makes transitioning to a different design or pattern easier while cutting costs with the next makeover. Furniture in solid colors or stains adapt to different designs more easily than patterned, printed or upholstered pieces.

Decorating

4. Make your own curtains or valances as a way to personalize the space while saving money. Use fabrics suited to your motif, such as camouflage patterned canvas for a hunting theme and printed calicos or muslins for fishing, forestry or other nature themes. Opaque fabrics work as blackout curtains, while gauzy organza can break up the heaviness of dark green walls by adding airy touches.

5. Paint secondhand or unfinished furniture as a versatile way to repurpose a piece from one motif to the next. Decorate a round bedside table with a billiard ball motif or cover it in a camouflage pattern with stenciled letters and stars. The piece can be easily changed or updated with a coat of primer and a new coat of paint.

6. Use solid colors for larger items and accessorize with themed pieces. Instead of purchasing a fishing-themed comforter or duvet, opt for solid green, brown or khaki spreads and accent with throws, pillow or shams. Make your own duvet cover in a reversible material to add both durability and flexibility to your decor.

7. Accessorize with sculptures, paintings and prints to accent your decor in a versatile and inexpensive way. Candles, flower arrangements and other decorative objects that fit your theme are simple to assemble and can be changed or replaced at low cost. Brass and bronze sculptures complement rich green wall colors, while silver and steel bring contrast and add a modern feel.
