Craft Projects For Bedroom Furniture

Dress up a boring bedroom with artistic touches.

If your bedroom is in need of an update, get crafty with your furniture. You can custom decorate your bedroom furniture pieces using a little imagination and few craft or household items. Use nature, magazines, your hobbies and interests or your favorite artwork as design inspiration.

Cardboard Night Stand

As an eco-friendly touch, transform used corrugated cardboard boxes into an eclectic night stand. The project is ideal if you just moved into a new home and have an abundance of boxes. The furniture item will be just as good for your budget as it is for the environment. Start by gathering several cardboard boxes. Make sure the boxes are all the same dimension. Flatten the boxes and trim the edges in decorative wavy patterns using a box cutter if you desire. Cover the sides of the boxes with spray adhesive and stack them together vertically until you've reached the desired table thickness. Enhance the cardboard night stand with craft paint, or leave it undecorated for an industrial-inspired style. You can place a piece of cut-to-fit glass or wood on top of the stand to even out the surface.

Crafty Headboard

Forgo a traditional wood bed headboard and opt for a hand-painted mural instead. Use paint and stencils to create a square, headboard-shaped mural directly behind your bed. Create a vibrant scene, such as beach, Tuscan countryside or garden, to reflect the bedroom's d cor theme. As another option, create an artistic-looking headboard by gluing brightly colored glass tiles behind the bed. If you want to jazz up a boring wood headboard, customize it with paint. Paint it all one color, such as bright red or turquoise, or use letter-shaped stencils to create charming messages such as "Dream a Little Dream" or "Sweet Dreams."

Decorated Dresser

If your bedroom dresser is on its last legs, give it a playful punch of color and whimsical design. To create a shabby chic look, paint the dresser with a rose pink hue. You can also use any other hue to coordinate with a bedroom color scheme. Decoupage the dresser's surface, sides and drawers with colorful flower-patterned scrapbook paper, gift wrap squares and vintage magazine ads for a quilt-inspired style. Attach the paper items to the dresser using Mod Podge, which is an all-in-one adhesive, sealer and finish. Replace the old drawer pulls with vintage-inspired glass or porcelain versions to complete the project.
