Diy Ideas For Decorating Your Bedroom

Bedrooms are very personal places, so we all have our own ideas about what looks or feels good in them. However, one thing we all agree on is the need for a certain amount of quality sleep. Creating a calming space free of distractions where we can relax and gradually grow sleepy is the ultimate goal. Sleep expert Dr Luisa Dilner recommends against placing televisions or other distracting electronics in bedrooms.

Trendy Teen Ideas

The quickest way to update a teen room is with new paint, sheets, bedspread and curtains. Liven things up with complementary colored throw rugs and pillows. Add shelves filled with bright plastic baskets for accessories and personal products, and fill colorful plastic frames with favorite posters. Teenagers are more likely to be fashion conscious than younger children or most adults, so decorate with current trends in mind for color and style, and consult your teen before making any major purchases.

Drapery Ideas

Create a luxurious bedroom space using drapery and simple hanging tricks. Get a beautiful full canopy effect over a platform bed by hemming four wide fabric sections and gathering them closely over a child's plastic hula hoop. Suspend the hoop from the ceiling, centered over the bed from a plant hook. Pull up the top third of each section using curtain tiebacks hung from cup hooks in the ceiling above the bed corners, and let the ends puddle on the floor. For each window, suspend a rod above and about four inches in front. Drape fabric up and over it loosely, creating deep swags to drape languidly over the top portion of the window and onto the floor.

Kid's Room Ideas

Kids outgrow styles fast, so there is little point in spending tons of money on costly redecorating you will repeat in a few months. Instead, purchase a plain wood chest and bed. Paint furniture, walls and trim white. Neutral backgrounds provide greater opportunity to be creative with easily replaced color - stencils, rugs, pillows and small accessories that will not break the bank. Use multicolor spreads and curtains to bring everything together regardless of changes in decor. Fasten a cork "picture rail" on the wall at kid height for pinning colorful artwork, and customize the room with novelty drawer knobs and boldly painted drawer fronts and headboard.

DIY Headboard Ideas

Sometimes you can change the whole feel of the room with a mere redesign of one key element like a headboard. Platform beds are especially nice in this regard as they do not have a built-in headboard. Try putting a white picket fence section behind the bed for country flair, or mount a huge Rococo-style gilded mirror hung round with velvet draperies for old world opulence. When you think creatively, almost anything -- from a vintage quilt suspended with ribbons, to a trompe-l'oeil mural or an upholstered square of plywood screwed to the wall -- can work to transform a ho-hum bedroom into something special.
