Instructions
1. Invest in organizers. Organizers help keep things in order so that clutter doesn't make the apartment seem even smaller. Small organizers hold pens, pencils and other desk items. Larger organizers take care of shoes, gadgets or even clothing items. Everything should have its own spot, so nothing is left sitting out anywhere. Once a tabletop has something on it, it becomes a hot spot for other junk. Avoid starting the avalanche of clutter.
2. Use storage. Woven basket storage containers with lids hide magazines, papers or mail. Items can go in clear plastic bins and found easily. These clear containers come in a variety of sizes that fit under the bed, in closets, underneath sinks and in drawers.
3. Try wall shelving. Wall shelving in small spaces serves a dual purpose. Not only is it a great way to display favorite and interesting items, but it also offers a place for display that doesn't clutter countertops. A few well-placed wall shelves give the room a sophisticated look.
4. Go light on the walls. In a small area, light walls are the best choice. Dark-colored walls make rooms appear smaller than they actually are, while light colors make them appear larger. Shades of cream, white and light taupe are the most common choice for light-colored walls. Any variation of a color is fine, just as long as it's light.
5. Add mirrors. Mirrors placed in a room make the space seem larger. The size of the mirror or mirrors used doesn't matter. Be creative with groups of smaller mirrors, or place a large mirror surrounded by smaller mirrors for an unexpected decorating twist.
6. Limit the amount of furniture. Don't litter the whole area with pieces of furniture. Make sure there is enough room for walking around safely. There should be enough seating for four people; anything beyond that is not necessary. Focus on creating a comfortable space, not a full space.
