Art deco's simple geometric lines were found in interior design as well as fine art.
Named for the Exposition de Artes Decoratifs held in Paris in 1925, the art deco movement was popular from the 1920s through the 1940s. It peaked during the 1930s, and Hollywood movie sets during this time reflected the style's popularity. Art deco was defined by curved edges, Middle Eastern and Latin influences and cubism. The style has been revived several times, and many of its elements remain popular, including those of the art deco bedroom. There are a variety of ways that you can capture this design style in your own bedroom.
Floors
Classic art deco design incorporated linoleum tile, which often had bold geometric (even checkered) designs printed on it. To capture this feeling, you could simply leave wood floors bare or use a rug with simple geometric patterns. Focus on patterns with simple, straight lines and angles rather than curves and embellished floral patterns.
Walls
Since art deco walls are also defined by their simplicity, bare walls with a simple border stenciling near the ceiling and floor capture the style well. A stippling paint finish is another option. Colors such as yellow, beige and cream for the walls with black border accents are very authentic and create a bold visual contrast.
Lighting
Art deco bedrooms typically had geometric wall sconces with simple lines. Add a couple of these to your bedroom, and attach a colored glass wall light or find lampshades with fringe or beading. If it is a small accent lamp, consider popular art deco accent colors like black, peacock blue or purple.
Furniture
Upholster a fabric headboard for a classic art deco look. Also try to incorporate wood furniture (mahogany and ebony were in high demand during the era) with simple lines and round corners. A mirrored vanity set for a woman's room adds a glamorous touch of art deco Hollywood.
Accent Ideas
For window coverings, the art deco style is defined by simple, boxy shades. Choose a neutral or accent color based on the window size. Also, any furniture or art deco wall art featuring flamingos, palm trees or lilies will add detailed touches to your art deco bedroom. Prints featuring these themes are also appropriate.
