Design A Boho Bedroom

Don't be afraid to go over the top with boho style.

If you are looking for a rich and vibrant bedroom style, you can't go wrong with boho. Short for bohemian, boho is an eclectic, exotic style combining the best of vintage and modern decor, introducing a variety of cultural influences for a powerful statement. The mood it creates is both relaxing and energizing, with its touch of romance and flair for drama. No matter what size your bedroom or your budget, boho is a perfect fit.

Instructions

1. Paint the room with a vibrant color palette. Jewel-toned shades of plum, indigo, sapphire or ruby red are ideal for boho walls, especially if applied with a paint treatment like sponging or rag rolling to give depth to the walls. If you prefer to keep things toned down, go with a neutral such as gray or antique white and introduce color with your fabric choices.

2. Lay Persian rugs with bold patterns on the floor. Even if you already have wall-to-wall carpeting, give the floor a layered look with area rugs to create a lush foundation.

3. Shop thrift stores and antique shops. Boho is a style in which used, mismatched furniture works, especially if the finish is imperfect. Look for pieces with stylish shapes and curves, ornate carvings or inlays. Look primarily for natural materials such as wood or metal-framed pieces.

4. Use furnishings in unexpected ways. Use an old iron fireplace screen with a fancy scroll as a headboard; use an old church pew as a bench under the window, an antique sewing table as a vanity or a plush velvet ottoman as a bedside table. As you shop and arrange your pieces, don't judge them by what they were intended to be, but by how creatively you can use them.

5. Layer the room liberally with fabric. Get plush bedding, and mix and match prints, such as striped sheets and a paisley comforter. Hang a tulle drape over the bed. If you're not crazy about an end table, throw a piece of scrap fabric over it. Hang window treatments with sheers, a valance and long panels that pool up on the floor.

6. Bring in romantic lighting in the form of Moroccan lanterns, oil lamps and candles to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Provide yourself with task lighting with a control to adjust the brightness as desired, such as an overhead fixture with a dimmer or a torchier lamp with a three-way bulb.

7. Adorn the room with accessories and artwork from different styles and cultures. A French impressionist print on the wall, a Greek urn on the dresser and a potted orchid are all at home in a boho room. Add an abundance of throw pillows in different sizes, shapes and colors. Tassels, fringes, beads and tie-backs are a plus in boho style, too.
