Paint Bedroom Walls Grey

Grey can be a beautiful color to paint bedroom walls if you choose the right shade. It can complement many colors, depending on which shade of grey you choose. Elegant and sophisticated, grey tends to give a bedroom a modern feel, although with the right décor, it can also take you back to 18th-century France.

Instructions

1. Evaluate your existing décor. A good thing about painting walls grey is that you can find a shade of grey that will complement the colors you are already using. Make a note of the dominant color in your décor. Go to the paint store and get a variety of grey swatches that complement that color. Many greys are tinted with colors such as red, blue or yellow and will have those tones. If the dominant color in your décor is yellow, choose a grey with yellow tones. It will hardly be detectable to the naked eye but will blend magically with your existing décor.

2. Take the paint swatches from the store home and hold them up at different places on your walls. Notice how they appear in areas of both high and low light. Hold them up to furniture and accessories to find the shade of grey that complements your bedroom the best. Keep in mind that the shade you choose will look considerably darker on the wall than it does on the swatch. Mollie Chalk on ShelterPop warns against painting walls a dark color if you have a small room with low ceilings, as it will give the room a claustrophobic feel (Reference 1). Stick with a light shade of grey if this is the case. In any case, it is best to choose a shade of grey that is one shade lighter than the one you think you want.

3. Prepare your walls. Use spackling to fill in any holes and sand over it to make it smooth. Lay down a drop cloth to protect your floors from paint spills.

4. Tape off edges and trim with painter's tape. Place it along ceilings, baseboards and all trim. Remove all switch plates and door hardware.

5. Use a primer to cover any existing paint on the walls. This step is very important. If you do not use a primer, the color of paint that was previously on your walls will influence the shade of grey you will be painting. You do not want your walls to turn out darker or with a different tint than you intended, so this is not a step you should skip.

6. Using a roller, paint your walls grey. Use two coats to obtain a smooth, uniform look that will have the exact shade of grey that you want. Allow 1 hour to dry between each application. Use a small brush to touch up any areas, such as corners, that did not get full coverage. Allow to dry for 2 hours, and then remove the painter's tape. You should have beautiful grey walls and an elegant bedroom.
