Observe Proper Etiquette In A Men'S Bathroom

The men's bathroom is a place you want to leave as fast as possible.

The men's bathroom is a complex social environment where everyone wants to get in and out as fast as possible. Normal rules like smiling and eye contact do not apply there. It is expected that you are to do your business and get out with the minimum of social interaction. There are several things you can do to make the visit as quick and painless as possible, like avoiding conversation and keeping focused on the goal.

Instructions

1. Go into the bathroom by yourself. Group bathroom visits are allowable for women, but not for men. The bathroom is not a social experience to be shared, it is a task to be accomplished. Avoid talking with others walking towards the bathroom as it risks the conversation being carried on to the interior. If having a conversation en route, it is perfectly acceptable to end it by saying that you need to use the bathroom.

2. Keep you eyes locked on the urinal or stall that you wish to visit. The bathroom is not a party and social connections are not to be sought within its confines. If there is a line then get in it and wait for your turn. Avoid bumping into anyone as physical contact in the bathroom should be avoided at all costs. If you do accidentally bump into someone quickly apologize and move on.

3. Keep your eyes locked forward if you are at the urinal. Do not look to the side or glance at anything. If you are in a stall, make sure the door is closed before starting. When at the urinal you should always maintain the "man distance" where there is an open urinal between you and any other person. If only the first urinal is occupied then take the furthest urinal from the guy. This allows for open space in the middle in case others come in.

4. Flush the toilet or urinal, dress yourself and turn towards the sinks. Walk quickly over to the sink and wash your hands with soap and water. Do not look for too long in the mirror as others will assume you are using it to look at others in the reflection. Dry your hands off with paper towels where possible as air dryers leave water on the hands and you will unable to shake hands with anyone after you leave the bathroom until the water is off. Shaking hands with damp hands after a visit to the bathroom is a major social misstep.
