Elegant Dining Room Ideas

An elegant dining room involves an air of formality.

Elegant decor in a dining room gives a formal atmosphere at dinner. When holding a dinner party, the appearance of the room often sets the mood. Creating an element of elegance in a dining room assists in giving an upscale feel to even a simplistic meal. Always keep the home owner's personality in mind when decorating to give a personal touch to the room.

Chandeliers

A chandelier's placement is key to the room.

One item to consider in the creation of an elegant dining room is a chandelier. The lighting source diffuses soft light throughout the room, eliminating shadows and harsh bright spots. The fixture is often the focal point in a room. For this reason, the chandelier may be the largest part of a decorating budget. Hang the fixture at least 30 inches above the table, and ensure it is a smaller width than the table.

Wall Coverings

In an elegant dining room, the wall coverings may contribute to the dinner conversation or act as room enhancers. A singular piece of art centered over the head of the table will spark conversation while adding a touch of class to the room. Several small pieces of art grouped along one wall suffice when a larger piece is not available or in the budget. In addition to or instead of art, mirrors add to the decor of the room. Neatly framed mirrors lining the walls give the appearance of a larger, grander room and allow guests to view all persons seated at the table.

Chairs

When decorating an elegant dining room, use straight-back, cloth-covered chairs. This style tends to lend itself to a more formal appearance. Crowned wood, high backs and armed styles work well for an elegant room. If the budget is small, cover plain straight-backed chairs as a do-it-yourself project. Make pillowcase style coverings to slide over the backs along with matching pillow seats.

Accessories

The table accessories are the finishing touch.

The finishing touches in an elegant dining room are the accessories for the table. Begin with a basic tablecloth in white or the selected room color. Add a lace or sheer overlay over the tablecloth to cover only the top of the table without hanging over the edge. Put placemats in front of each chair along with a dinnerware. Stack a salad or appetizer plate on a dinner plate in the center of each mat. Roll silverware in a cloth napkin, and place them on top of the plates, or set the utensils in proper order beside the plates. Create a centerpiece for the table from a vase and flowers, and finish the decor with candles in matching holders. Small touches, including delicate ribbons to tie napkin rolls, add to the elegance of the room.
